The transition between intense workout sessions and recovery periods is essential in maintaining athletes’ physical and psychological well-being, and crucial for a successful training program. Breaks allow muscles to recover and help the body get fitter. Without concern for the necessary recuperation and rest for body and mind, the desired success will fail to materialize. Therefore, the recovery period is not only the follow-up of the training or competitions but also the preparation for the next athletic challenge.
WHY ARE RECOVERY AND REGENERATION NECESSARY AFTER SPORT ACTIVITIES?
Every intensive sporting activity causes tiny injuries to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones and cartilages – so called micro traumas. The repair mechanisms of the body start during the rest periods and especially at night when the body is striving to heal these tiny injuries through super compensation, whereby the body is further strengthened for increased loads. This is exactly the impact which should be achieved by each training session.
